
Sen. Jesse Helms from North Carolina. No great loss. He was 86. This was a man from another time. A time that many Americans would like to forget. He was a self-proclaimed "redneck." He was, in reality, a far right wing conservative racist that even Ronald Reagan called a "thorn in my side." He represented the worst of America. He was against Federal funding to find a cure for AIDS, against civil rights for Gays, against women's rights, against, against, against. He served 30-years in the Senate. Larry Margasak of the Associated Press reports that "As a television commentator before running for the Senate, Helms said, "Dr. (Martin Luther) King's outfit ... is heavily laden at the top with leaders of proven records of communism, socialism and sex perversion, as well as other curious behavior."
