This is a photo of a black dog. Let's say, for argument sake, that it is a black lab mix. Why would you decide to leave this dog, with its collar on, at a truck stop like the Flying J, and drive away? I see dogs like this everywhere I go. Mrs. Grumpy and I have "adopted" about 5 dogs. We currently have 2 - a large beagle "mix" that my son and I "rescued" in Hattiesburg, MS. The other, our oldest, a gentle "terripoo" that we "rescued" from our local animal shelter. Before and after dinner here at the Lebanon IN FJ, there are two black labs with collars that were abandoned by their owners. I know the signs. The dogs run around looking for their former owners. They get thirsty fast. Who knows when they last ate. They run all over the parking lot back and forth searching for some signs of familiarity. Some folks try to pet or feed them, but the dogs are naturally leery of approaching strangers. That was the case with the dog my son "rescued" in Hattiesburg. We were eating breakfast. My son saw the dog - he named him Joe - running back and forth lost, scared, hungry and thirsty. He took some of his egg and bacon biscuit and ran after the dog. Joe started to widen his circle beginning to get out into traffic. He was confused and we believe he would have been hit and killed by a truck or car. Joe saw my son with the food in hand and ran toward him. He directed Joe to our truck and opened the door. Joe jumped in, ate the food and slept in the bunk for 2 days. We have now had him for several years and he is a wonderful companion. Why he was abandoned, I have no idea. Why the two dogs running lost around the FJ parking lot were let go, I have no idea. I am sure in this town there is a shelter. We are not far from Indianapolis. I know there are plenty of shelters there. I can only feel that people like this, the one's that abandon their pets, are cowards. They are lazy and cruel. I can only hope that it wasn't a trucker. I hope they know better. If you don't want your pet, whatever it is - cat, bird, dog, snake, other type of reptile, etc. please make the effort - go the extra mile - and find it a safe home. The photo credit is
