The #1 reason that I’m not an owner/operator is that I’d have to waste so much valuable time dealing with the devil, I mean a broker. I’ve been in this business a long time. Never once have I ever had any positive dealings with a broker. And to fortify that feeling, the load I’m currently under, a load right from the brokers home, is truly another load from hell.
I picked it up last Wednesday. That’s 6 days ago! I’ll spare you the gory details. I wrote about some of the problems in an earlier post. The load had two pick ups and three drops. It is lumber, all going to Navy and US Defense Department “supply depots” here in PA. The first stop was 8am this Monday. I was on time and was unloaded by about 10am.
The second stop. Well, they kinda refused it. They have demanded a fax of the BOL and have told “us” that they can unload us “sometime” on Thursday. They wanted 1 week prior notice to set up an appointment. This particular government installation is, well, NUTS!
The carrier has agreed to pay me $150/day detention. The broker is having kanipshins and shit-fits and desperately wants to blame somebody for something, but they’re screwed. They have nobody to blame but themselves and their own incredible inefficiency and stupidity.
In order to drive this broken even more crazy, I refuse to take their calls. You should hear the voice mail I’m getting from…oops I can’t tell you their name. Ever hear of a guy named Caruso on an island?
I got a call just after dinner from the carrier. Could I “get over there” in 15 minutes – they’ll unload me. I laugh when someone tells me to “get over” somewhere driving a big truck. Unload me - they will? How? Apparently someone over there can do it – let’s call him Phil. I need directions. Ok, you can call Phil. Gee thanks. Hello, Phil. I tell Phil where I am. Oh really, 50 miles away? Really, rush hour? So you don’t unload in the dark? Ok, how about in the morning? Oh, just show up and ask if they’ll take me in? Really. Thanks a whole bunch there Phil.
Are they kidding or what? A defense depot that supplies our bases all over the world can’t unload at night? Can you say fubar? I’m going to go there in the morning and I guarantee you they’ll refuse to unload me until Thursday. Another $150 for me. McCain says the “defense acquisition system “is broken. Man oh man, he ain’t lying.
I’ll be back in the FJ t/s lot in Carlisle PA by 10am online again.
Brokers are the devil NOT in disguise.
